THE HOT COIN TEST

Remembering that the subconscious mind is about 90 percent of the over-all mind, and further that it is non-judgmental, this test can be given to likely subjects or to adolescents at a party.

This is also one where the power of suggestion is clearly demonstrated.

Take a quarter or half-dollar on loan from one of the party. Ask your volunteering subject to hold the coin in his hand. Now tell him that as he clenches the coin tightly it will become hot. Hotter and hotter. (You will have told the subject to look into your eyes, while you are looking between his, of course.)

"The coin is getting hotter, hotter.... hotter and hotter. You can feel the heat of the coin... getting hotter and hotter."

As you repeat the positive suggestion you must also instruct: the subject to release the coin when it becomes "too hot to handle."

Blisters and inflamed areas in the palm of a subject's hand have resulted when the coin was held too long. So both before and during the test you should instruct to release the coin in time.

Also, before the demonstration remind the subject that you are not looking for heroes or to determine how much pain he can withstand, rather that you are demonstrating the power of suggestion.

In this test and indeed with any demonstration, the choice of a subject can make or break the hypnotist, his reputation, and therefore, potentially, his income. There is always the danger of selecting a show-off who will do almost anything to attract attention to himself.

It isn't hard to see that great care must always be taken in the selection of a subject as well as in the other vital factors of a demonstration. Your own experience in these matters will be the best teacher.
